It's no coincidence that the last recorded words that we he from Mary are:
"Whatever He says to you, do it."
(John 2:5)
Deacon Art says that holds true today just as much
as it did at that wedding feast in Cana.
Just Do It (John 2:5)
God is much more involved in our simple everyday lives than we realize.
Since He is God, we expect that He might not be so concerned about the trivial aspects and mundane moments of our lives, but God tends to show up at places like wedding ceremonies and water wells and dinner tables in the scriptures more than he does in the the places where people expected to see him.
So Mary tells the servants, Whatever He tells you to do ... do it!
Does God speak to you
Have you ever felt a gentle nudge from Him to do something for Him or to help someone for Him?
Too often we hear God speak to us, but then we soon dismiss what He says to us as too trivial to be God or too complex to be possible.
Sometimes we come up with every excuse under the sun to not do what it is that He is calling us to do.
Mary's charge to the servants to "Do Whatever He Tells You To Do" commands them to be obedient to what Jesus says to them.
These people were hired servants
They were used to doing whatever they were told to do
They understood that it was not their place to question or doubt what someone told them to do
They were servants
They served
Her is where so many of us miss out on the miraculous in our lives
We find it difficult to believe God speaks to us in our lives
We question
We fear
We disagree
We challenge
We know better
We doubt
We miss out on the miraculous moments
Mary's faith in Jesus superseded the problem at hand
Her knowledge of who He was displaced any fear or possibility that the water pots would come back as water pots
The servants' willingness to do whatever He told them to do channeled a miracle for some unknown people for an almost unexpected purpose
Wine at a wedding?
Why mention it?
It almost sound too innocuous to discuss
But this is where Jesus works
In the menial
In the almost unmentionable
In the places where most of us would not expect him to show up
And it's in these places where He most often speaks to us.
When He does, we should learn, listen, then Just Do It!
When He tells you to talk to someone about Him, don't doubt -- Just Do It!
When He tells you to apologize, don't argue -- Just Do It!
When He tells you to bless someone else, don't question -- Just Do It!
Homework:
Commit to reading each week (preferably NOT on a Sunday) a scripture passage to yourself, your spouse, your child, your sibling and ask: How does this affect me?
