It was in January that Archbishop Blair celebrated Mass in Thanksgiving for the Gift of Life. In his homily, he said:
"Despite the ongoing tragedy of abortion in America, there are encouraging signs that the pro-life message is having an effect on a younger generation. Yet there are always new threats. Here in Connecticut we will no doubt witness very soon a renewed attempt to introduce assisted suicide legislation. An argument will be made by the proponents of assisted suicide that this is a compassionate thing to do, but the reality is far different. In the words of the U.S. bishops: “True compassion alleviates suffering while maintaining solidarity with those who suffer. It does not put lethal drugs into their hands and abandon them to their suicidal impulses, or to the self-serving motives of others who may want them dead.”The Bishops of our state and our Connecticut Catholic Conference, together with many other groups, will be striving to defeat this measure. We will be asking all of you to stand up and be counted in resisting the efforts to pass this legislation." ( Archbishop Blair's full homily can be found by clicking here)
Archbishop Blair and the bishops of Connecticut are soliciting our support and cooperation regarding a legislative proposal that may arise in 2015, which would legalize physician-assisted suicide.
